A Bugatti Chiron fitted with MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres became the first car to push past the 300-mph barrier in the world, after reaching an independently validated speed of 304.773 mph (490,484 km/h).

The car that beat the record was driven by Bugatti test driver, Andy Wallace, in August 2019 on the Bugatti Ehra-Lessien test track in northern Germany.
The MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres used for this record carried the “BG” stamp, which means that they are only fitted to Bugatti cars and are road certified. The tyres had to withstand 5,300 g at these very high speeds.

During the development of the Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, specifically designed for the Bugatti Chiron, Michelin called upon its technology centres in Clermont-Ferrand, France and in Charlotte SC, USA. To test the tyres at the very high speeds the Bugatti Chiron is capable of reaching, Michelin used equipment that can carry out tests at a maximum speed of 316.9 mph, designed to test space shuttle tyres.

For this outstanding vehicle, Michelin and Bugatti engineers worked jointly to develop the tyres and body, making the most of cutting-edge materials technology and state-of-the-art production techniques. This simultaneous joint development of the car and the tyre made it possible to reach optimum tyre performance for the Bugatti Chiron. This partnership with Bugatti is now some twenty years old.

In addition to their outstanding speed and level of safety, the MICHELIN Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres also enhance the car’s road holding, ensuring that the owners of the Bugatti Chiron can drive this exclusive car in all road conditions.
