71% of motorists think that the 100% autonomous vehicle will become a reality within the next ten years, according to a study published by the 2018 Cetelem Automobile Observatory. The Chinese are the most optimistic (92%), followed by the Mexicans (89%) and the Brazilians (85%). These countries are also those that are ready for this motoring experience.

Almost half the motorists questioned worldwide (48%) claim to be ready to buy an autonomous vehicle, albeit with great disparities from region to region. The Chinese are by far the most enthusiastic and 92% claim to be ready to drive an autonomous car right now, followed by the Mexicans (79%) and the Brazilians (68%). These same countries claim to be ready to pay more for a fully autonomous vehicle. It would thus appear that the emerging and dynamic markets are those the most in favour of autonomous vehicles, compared to more traditional nations such as Japan and the United States (39%) or France (33%).

Generally speaking, it is the 18 to 29-year-old bracket (29%) that is the most interested by autonomous vehicles worldwide.

This study was carried out online from August 28 to September 21, 2017 by Kantar TNS among 10,600 owners of personal vehicles bought new or second hand over the last five years and in 15 countries (Belgium, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States), selected by the quota method.
