After the Dakar, a 100% electric rally raid in Argentina

Electric vehicles have ambition : a new rally-raid will kick off in 2018 in Argentina showcasing a 5,000km sporting and technological challenge over the Andes by car, motorbike and bicycle!

"It will be the first ever 100% electric automobile raid in the world. The focus is on endurance rather than speed and the challenge is technological, sporting and ecological. It will be a test of endurance for the vehicles and the participants”, reported the event organizer, Bruno Ricordeau to the AFP.

The Green Expedition will take the competitors from the southernmost tip of the American continent in Patagonia to the high plains of the province of Salta in northern Argentina on the border with Bolivia, from 9 to 28 April 2018.

“The spirit is that of the Dakar without the speed because you can’t drive at full throttle with an electric motorbike or you run out of “steam” after 200km”, explained Bastien Hieyte, one of the motorbike competitors.

This 31-year old Jura-born biker has won four French trial championships, the last on an electric bike, competing against regular bikes. “The strategy in this type of competition is to ride intelligently to economise the battery”, he explains.

At the moment, as he explains, electric motorbikes have an autonomy of around 400km, but “new technologies are in the pipeline that will bump this up to 1000km”.

In Argentina, he will drive a Belgian bike manufactured by EVE Dynamics and “customised to improve its autonomy”, powered by a 10kW engine equivalent to a 450cm3 engine. If the experience is successful, he’s thinking of taking part in the Dakar 2019.

Eric Loizeau, navigator and mountaineer, will be at the wheel of a Tesla.

The competition has received the backing of the French and Argentinean authorities due to its innovation in terms of energy.
