What are the types of routes proposed by ViaMichelin?

By clicking on “> Options”, you can reach options of configurations to calculate the route which corresponds to your choices.

For 4 ways of transportation (car / motorcycle / bike / pedestrian), ViaMichelin proposes you 5 types of routes:

  • MICHELIN recommended: The route deemed to be the safest and simplest with minimal scope for error along the way. The default recommended route from Michelin.
  • Quickest (priority at the time): The route likely to offer the shortest journey time to the chosen destination, favouring main roads and, in particular, highways.
  • Shortest (priority at the distance): The route offering the shortest distance to a destination via the most accessible roads. Journey times for this option will tend to be longer.
  • Discovery: The route option for scenic roads that may have a touristic interest.
  • Economical: The most fuel-efficient route that also avoids toll roads.

What route calculation options are offered by ViaMichelin?

By clicking on “> Options”, you can access settings options for calculating the route that matches your choice.

ViaMichelin offers 6 options to refine your route:

  • Favour motorways: by selecting this option the calculated route will prioritise main roads (motorways, expressways...).
  • Avoid tolls: within reason, without increasing journey time or route distance too much, the route will use roads without tolls. However, the suggested route may include a section of road with tolls if any detour proves too excessive.
  • Avoid vignettes: in some countries (e.g. Switzerland), certain routes will require the purchase of a vignette. The route calculated will avoid taking any such routes whenever possible.
  • Avoid ferry connections: within reason, without increasing journey time or route distance too much, the route proposed will avoid sea crossings (e.g. ferry crossings...). However, the suggested route may include this mode of transport if any detour proves too excessive.
  • Authorise country border crossings: for routes running close to country borders, this option enables the calculation of routes that include border crossings; otherwise, the route will remain within the country of departure and arrival, even if it involves a large detour.
  • Car with caravan: this option will impact journey times but not toll costs.
